Festive Hand Sewing
A Zine
This zine is a spiral-bound, 54-page exploration of how we can use hand sewing to rebel against despair, infusing layers of added joy into preexisting garments.
Festive Hand Sewing is not about any specific holiday, but rather about the ancient human impulse to shine light into dark times. Beyond these philosophical underpinnings, the zine features 22 different real-deal sewing skills, including: making charming ball buttons out of nothing but fabric; drafting and sewing new collar shapes to replace the old ones; creating complex appliqués using English paper piecing methods; making fabric-corded designs; stitching beads onto garments; and more. Along the way, 11 different stitches are shared, as well as lots of invitations to embrace whimsy and imagination.
For millenia, in times of darkness, humans have gathered to sing, dance, feast, let off steam, and reflect whatever light can be found. Today, let’s use our hands to stitch the best parts of humanity – humor, tenderness, care, whimsy, curiosity, experimentation, problem-solving, and more. By sewing with defiant joy, we can invite the festive (the joyful, the rebellious, the nourishing, the communal) into our everyday acts of living.
